For optimal performance and maximum coverage of the vacant property, Swidget recommends the following when selecting installation locations:
Video Cameras:
- Select key traffic locations, like the front entrance, kitchen, and/or rear ingress point (patio or backdoor).
- Select an outlet or switch location that has a clear line of sight to the lock or an unobstructed view of the entire room/entryway.
- Avoid positioning video cameras directly opposing one another; in low light conditions, the camera emits concentrated IR light that will interfere with the opposing camera's ability to detect motion or people.
Motion Sensors:
- Select likely high-traffic locations adjacent to the video camera locations, like a main hallway, living room, etc.
- Avoid positioning the motion sensors near furniture or appliances that could obscure the field of detection of the sensor.
- Motion sensors can be used for appliance theft detection if installed behind large appliances, like a fridge, that should never otherwise move.
Wiring Devices:
- If installing in older homes, check the electrical box depths first. Older electrical boxes tend to be shallower and can prevent the proper installation of the Swidget device in the box. Excessive loading of the grounding yoke can have adverse effects on the mechanical alignment within the devices and render it difficult to install and/or remove the inserts.
- An assortment of single pole, 3-way, and 4-way switches.
- Single and double gang decorator or mixed style faceplates (see examples here and here), in the event that the preferred installation of the host device is located in a double gang box with traditional style toggle switches.
- There MUST be a dedicated Neutral in the wiring box to correctly install switches.
- It is recommended that wiring or re-wiring of the host devices be completed and tested without the camera installed in them. Incorrect wiring and rough handling may result in unknown behavior for the camera.
NOTE
Swidget recommends outfitting installers with Arlington faceplates to facilitate installation in shallow or tight boxes and to educate installers of the risks associated with box-fill issues.
